What is Dependency and Neglect under Colorado law?
Under Colorado law, dependency and neglect refer to situations where a child's health, welfare, and safety are endangered or at risk due to the actions or omissions of their parent or caregiver. Specifically, a child can be considered dependent or neglected if they have been subjected to abuse, neglect, or mistreatment, or if they lack proper care or supervision.
The Colorado Department of Human Services is responsible for investigating reports of child abuse or neglect and providing services to families to help ensure the safety and well-being of children.
In cases where a child is found to be dependent or neglected, the court may intervene to ensure that the child receives appropriate care and protection, which may include removing the child from their home and placing them in foster care or with a relative.
What is our role?
If the Colorado Department of Human Services believes that a child in your family is facing some level of danger, they may intervene. You may be a parent in one of these cases or a foster parent.
This process can be time-consuming, complicated, and overwhelming. Like other court processes, you may hear phrases that are unfamiliar and intimidating to you. This may make you feel belittled and like your voice does not matter. Perhaps it's also unclear to you why the Department of Human Services is even focused on intervention with your family.
Our family law attorneys are prepared to walk you through this process and to help you achieve your goals. If you have been contacted by the Department of Human Services regarding your family or a family with which you are involved, let one of our family law attorneys discuss the process with you at a free initial consultation.
